Boar bristles have been on the market for hundreds of years. They are still one of the best-selling comb types on the market. So, what are the advantages that have enabled it to remain a competitive brush choice?
1. Distribution of sebum oil
The boar bristles will do a great job of distributing the sebum oil from the scalp down to the hair ends. Sebum oil is a natural lubricant for the hair, that makes guards against lost moisture and makes the hair shine. In addition, the distribution of sebum oil is even, making this is the most convenient way to fight static electricity, and it increases blood flow which promotes hair growth by stimulating the scalp.
2. Suitable for all kinds of hairstyles
Whether you want flattering smooth hair or voluminous curls, the versatility of boar bristles will satisfy you. They grip hair easily and allow for easy manipulation of various hairstyles. If you want soft hair, use a paddle comb. If you want to blow out voluminous curls, an around roller comb will be the right choice for you.
3. Soft and non-invasive to the skin
Nylon is one of the most common materials for brushes and combs, it is also a much harder material than boar bristles. Where hard or aggressive brushing with nylon bristles can produce white or red scratches on the skin, boar bristles leave no such marks. Even with the addition of massage beads, it is nylon bristles still remain harder. This is especially evident in the selection of materials for men’s beard combs. This type of beard comb is going to come into direct contact with the skin of the cheek, and if it is too hard, it will cause injury to the face. However, if it is too soft, it will not do the job of grooming. Boar bristles are the perfect raw material for brushes and make excellent massage tools, due to their balance between softness and rigidity.
4. Easy to clean the scalp
The dense bristle brush will brush the dirt out of your hair very well.
Boar bristles are widely used for dust brushes for tweed and suits; they easily take away dust/hair/pet hair from clothes without scratching or damaging the fabric. This demonstrates its cleaning advantages.
5. Rigid, strong elasticity, resistant to deformation, moisture resistance
The malleability and cheapness of nylon is the reason it was chosen as a comb/brush material. However, it is inevitable that you will encounter the problem of crooked nylon pins over any long-term use. Even with a brand-new wig comb, you will tend to find that the nylon pins will be crooked when they arrive. Such problems can be well avoided with a boar bristle brush. It is stiff and yet, it remains flexible, which is a key factor for it to stay neat and straight. This will also mean that it will not be easily damaged, which means it will be with you for a long time to take care of your hair, and will not need to be constantly replaced, unlike a nylon brush.
6. High-temperature resistance, doesn’t produce harmful substances at high temperatures
There are countless plastic/nylon brushes and combs on the market. It is important to note, that nylon is not resistant to high temperatures. When it reaches a temperature of more than 90oC, for instance, in a hot car or sitting on the window sill in sunlight, it will begin to emit harmful ammonia gas as it begins to warp and melt.
The melting point of boar bristles is considerably higher, at above 200 degrees, and the bristles are often processed at a temperature of 100 -130 degrees, for between 30 minutes and 4 hours to straighten them. During this time, the keratin contained in the bristles does not produce any toxic gases or other harmful substances at high temperatures. So, you won’t have to worry about your hair getting tangled up with the melted plastic bristles when you’re brushing your hair whilst using a high-powered hairdryer.
